Carlo Navarro
Carlo Navarro was born in Detroit, Michigan, one of three kids (the middle child, he assured us that he was) in a family that breathed music from generations past. His father an accomplished guitar player, grandfather a big band musician and great grandfather a big band composer and conductor. Music for Navarro was surely in the blood.
“I had the hardest time keeping focus in school,” Navarro recalls. “There were not many things that could keep my attention long enough.” One thing that did grab his attention was music. Though he has been playing the violin since he was 5 years old, Navarro picked up a guitar (which was always laying around in the house) when he was 17 and began to write.
Navarro remembers falling in and out of love of the idea of becoming a musician throughout his high school and college years. “You are surrounded with so many people and things that tell you to go get a secure job and find stability. Music was rarely in that column and I got thrown off course,” Navarro said. Needless to say he is back on course with the release of his first independent album.
After production of the album “Finding Strength,” Navarro continues to play in the city of Chicago where he now resides. He searches for strength everyday to eventually wake up and do music full time. Perhaps this is the essence of the new album.
There comes a point in ones life where the time is right, where all things are aligned and waiting for the inevitable moment for the voice to say go, is just around the corner.
“It always came back to the music, it was the only thing that ever really made sense to me” Navarro proclaimed. “No matter what I thought I wanted to do for the rest of my life, music was always at the back of my mind.”
The road ahead for Navarro is marked with working full time to afford to duplicate cds and guitar strings; he is definitely paying his dues. But a journey as a musician without hardships or struggles wouldn’t be a journey at all, he reminds us. Navarro still dreams of waking up on a tour bus, playing and performing night after night. To some that may seem crazy, to Carlo Navarro, it’s his destiny.
